Sam Cooke - A Change is Gonna Come
I’m cheating a little here because A Change is Gonna Come was technically released in late-December of 1964, shortly after Cooke’s death. Inspired by Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind, the song became an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement. It topped out at No. 35 on the pop charts and made the RS Top 500 at number 12.
